Dear Tech In-Law,
I saw a news report on the Wii Fit game and balance board recently released by Nintendo and we are considering purchasing this for our two children currently play video games.  Have you had a chance to play with the device and if so what are your thoughts?  Do you think this will actually help people lose weight?  Is it fun enough for kids to stick with?

Jill

Dear Jill,
I was fortunate enough to pick up a copy of Wii Fit on the release day and to answer your question directly, I do believe this will assist with weight loss and I must say the fun factor is off the charts!  There are 4 categories of activities including yoga, strength, aerobics, and balance games.  While your kids may stick more to the balance games they will be up and moving and will take the already innovative Wii gameplay to another level.  My children are young but all enjoy getting on the balance board and breaking a sweat!

You are assigned a personal trainer that helps guide you through each activity and you are awarded stars and point based on how well you execute each activity. In addition to the activities, you are able to take daily "body tests" that will measure your weight and BMI and has some optional balance tests.  All of this combined will give you a "Wii Fit Age."  Let's just say my Wii Fit age was a tad bit older that my actual age!  Also of note is the ability to set goals for yourself and a chart system where you can input your daily activities outside of Wii Fit and see how you are progressing over time

All of these features help keep you motivated to return to the game consistently to check your progress and increase your standing.  I would reccomend making Wii Fit part of a larger exercise regimen.  On a personal level, it is nice for me for the days I cannot make it to the gym it allows me to remain active.  Whether I am rhythm boxing or hula hooping I can safely say I have never smiled more while exercising!
